The back figure is taking shape with the face in deep shadow and full light which gives a drama to the figure. Whilst I consider myself a realist, in oils I am quite impressionistic, which can be seen if the photo of this painting can be enlarged. For me to be a realist in the classical sense, I would need to work larger and have more time between each successive 'glaze' layer of paint. I work part 'wet in wet' and having a drying time for highlights and corrections.
